The New York Times decided to trace the First Lady’s family roots and found out that her great, great, great-grandmother was a slave from South Carolina.
Michelle Obama’s family history is like most other African-Americans. Her great, great, great-grandmother Melvinia Shields was a slave woman who was raped by a white man. According to the report, Michelle’s ancestry traces back to South Carolina, to Georgia, to Birmingham, Ala., then to Chicago and now to the White House.
Michelle’s family roots were discovered by genealogist Megan Smolenyak, who has now helped the First Lady to unsolve a mystery that many African-Americans seek out to find everyday. Michelle has yet to comment on the study and report that has been released by the New York Times.
